Initial Exam

What happens at my first visit?

This is a time for Dr. Elison to listen to patient concerns and to provide an orthodontic examination. Dr. Elison will likely be able to indicate whether or not treatment is needed and if needed, when the best time to start treatment would be.The Initial examination is a FREE visit. Dr. Elison will evaluate the bite and its relationship to the facial esthetics and answer any questions you may have. With our advanced computer technology, Dr. Elison will show how teeth move and explain the benefits you can expect from orthodontic treatment. He will also give you an idea of how long you can expect to be in treatment.  At this time we will also discuss fees for orthodontic care, general payment options, and insurance benefits.

What if orthodontic treatment is needed?

If treatment is needed, the next step from your initial examination would be scheduling a diagnostic records appointment followed by continuing treatment as discussed during exam.

How do I  know treatment is right for me or my child?

Orthodontic care is not a "one-size-fits-all" approach. Each patient has a unique problem that requires a unique treatment plan. What is right for one person may not be right for another. The diagnosis of your problem and the treatment plan are the result of study of your mouth and diagnostic records.

What are diagnostic records?

Diagnostic records is a typical step prior to beginning treatment including gathering orthodontic records to provide specific information to tailor a treatment plan for each individual patient.

Diagnostic records include x-rays, photographs, and impressions made of the teeth. These "molds" are used to develop models for closer examination of the teeth and how the upper and lower teeth relate to each other.  X-rays are taken to look at the root structure of the teeth and how the jaw bones and teeth relate to each other.  At times additional imaging of the temporomandibular joints is helpful.  Typically facial photographs and intra-oral photographs are taken to evaluate facial proportions, facial aesthetics and the health of the teeth and gums.  These diagnostic records collectively enable Dr. Elison to develop an appropriate treatment plan for the patient.
